Cardiac Surgery

The Department of Cardiac Surgery engages both preclinical and clinical research activities.

Specific areas of preclinical research include the pathophysiology of acute cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury and cardioprotection in the context of cardiac transplantation, particularly heart transplantation with donation after circulatory death (DCD). Clinical research comprises cardiac surgery, with particular emphasis on prosthetic aortic valves and comparison of catheter-based versus surgical procedures, aortic surgery, and vascular surgery, with special focus on native and vascular graft infections.
